The Cayuga duck is an American breed that originated in the mid-1800s in New York’s Finger Lakes region. Believed to have descended from wild black ducks, it was prized for its meat, beautiful plumage, and consistent egg production.
Cayugas have rich, velvety black feathers with an iridescent sheen that shimmers green and blue in the sunlight, often developing soft silver highlights with age.
They are quiet, hardy, and excellent foragers, making them well-suited to a variety of climates and farm settings. Hens can lay between 100 and 150 eggs a year, with colors ranging from nearly black early in the season to pale grey or white as the season progresses.
Once a common farmyard bird, their popularity declined with the rise of commercial white Pekins, but they remain cherished today for their hardiness, calm temperament, and stunning feather color.
We have Cayuga ducks available in a variety of ages to suit different needs, whether you’re starting a new flock or adding to an existing one or looking for new bloodlines.
Adult Cayuga ducks have stunning colors when the sunlight catches the iridescent colours of black, green, blue, and purple.
